The Fläpps 40x40-1 shelf by AMBIVALENZ rests on a simple idea: a panel that folds against the wall when not needed, and becomes a shelf as soon as it's opened. This square format, with a single compartment, slips into a hallway, above a desk or in an entrance where every centimetre counts.

The structure combines birch plywood coated with coloured HPL and stainless steel hinges. The wood remains light, the mechanism handles a serious load for an object of this size. The Vallunaraju pattern is signed by Joe Mania, who treats the facade as a graphic surface rather than simple storage.

Fixed on its own, the shelf works as a colourful accent on a bare wall. Multiplied, it creates a grid whose rhythm and patterns you choose. Once closed, it returns to the thickness of a painting and completely frees up the passage.
