Living Room Armchairs

Nearly 1,000 living room armchairs made by Normann Copenhagen, Hem, &tradition, 366 Concept or Muuto, in wood, fabric or leather, from lounge chairs to swivel designs.

A living room armchair complements the sofa, or replaces it in a small room. It creates a seat apart, for reading or entertaining, and is often the most sculptural piece in the room.

Choosing shape and comfort

A lounge chair with a low, deep seat invites you to relax, while a more upright armchair suits conversation. Swivel designs let you turn towards the television or the window, rocking chairs keep a gentle movement, and a few convertible designs offer an occasional bed. Check the seat height against that of the sofa: a difference of more than 5 cm is noticeable.

Wooden frame, fabric or leather

A wooden frame, most often oak or walnut, gives many of the armchairs in the selection their Scandinavian style. Fabric, bouclé and wool upholstery dominate, in beige, brown, grey and black tones. Metal appears in the slender bases of the more contemporary designs.

Frequently asked questions

How many armchairs in a living room?

A single armchair is enough alongside a three-seater sofa. Two identical armchairs placed opposite the sofa create a more formal living room, good for conversation. In a small room, two armchairs and a coffee table can replace the sofa.

Which armchair for a small living room?

Choose an armchair on legs with a visible frame: it lets the eye pass through and looks less bulky than a solid design. A width of 70 to 80 cm suits most small living rooms. Avoid very high backs if it is to stand in front of a window.

Should the armchair match the sofa?

It does not have to. An armchair in a different colour or material from the sofa gives the living room depth. Keep one thing in common, such as the wood tone or the seat height, so the whole stays coherent.
