Bathroom Lighting

More than 200 bathroom lights: IP44 to IP65 water-resistant wall lights and splash-proof cordless lamps, by Tala, Ebb & Flow, Louis Poulsen, &tradition or Flos.

In a bathroom, a light has to withstand humidity and splashes of water. The designs gathered here carry a protection rating suited to damp rooms, most often IP44.

Understanding the IP rating

The second digit of the IP rating indicates water resistance: 4 for splashes, 5 for jets, 7 for temporary immersion. An IP44 light is suitable around the basin and in the rest of the room. Near the shower or bath, you need a higher rating and must respect the safety zones set by the electrical standard: if in doubt, ask an electrician for advice.

Wall lights and cordless lamps

Wall lights go on either side of the mirror, at face height, for shadow-free lighting. Rechargeable cordless lamps sit on a shelf or the edge of the bath, with no socket needed nearby. Metal, glass and ceramic are the most common materials.

Frequently asked questions

Which IP rating for a bathroom light?

IP44 is the minimum in the area around the basin and more than 60 cm from the shower or bath. Above the bath or in the shower, you need at least IP65 and, depending on the position, an extra-low voltage supply. The exact rules depend on the zones defined by the electrical standard.

Where to place wall lights around a mirror?

On each side of the mirror, at eye level, around 1.60 to 1.70 m from the floor. This side lighting avoids shadows on the face, unlike light that comes only from the ceiling.

Can a cordless lamp stay in a bathroom?

Yes, if its protection rating is at least IP44: check it on the product page. Recharge it outside the damp room and avoid leaving it in a puddle.
