A living room rug marks out the sofa area, muffles footsteps and sets the colour of the room. It is often what ties the sofa, coffee table and armchairs together as one group.

What size rug for a living room?

The simplest rule: the rug should at least take the front legs of the sofa and armchairs. With a three-seater sofa, a 170x240 cm rug suits a small living room, 200x300 cm is the standard, and very large sizes take a corner sofa or a whole modular arrangement. A round rug 200 cm or more in diameter works well under a round coffee table or in a square living room.

Wool, natural fibres or easy-care materials

Wool leads the selection: it is thick, warm underfoot and keeps its shape for years. Jute and natural fibres bring a rawer texture, while cotton or synthetic rugs are easier to wash in a busy living room. As for colour, beiges, greys and blues sit alongside many multicoloured patterned rugs.

Frequently asked questions

What size rug under a three-seater sofa?

Allow for a rug at least 20 cm wider than the sofa on each side. With a three-seater sofa of around 200 cm, a 200x300 cm rug lets you place the front legs of the sofa and the coffee table on it. In a small living room, 170x240 cm is still enough if only the front legs rest on the rug.

Do you need a wool rug in a living room?

Wool is the most durable choice for a room with heavy footfall: it resists crushing, shows dirt more slowly than you might think and insulates against the cold. It sheds a few fibres in the first months, which is normal. For a living room with young children or pets, a washable cotton rug or one in synthetic fibres needs less upkeep.

Round or rectangular rug in a living room?

A rectangle follows the line of the sofa and suits most living rooms. A round rug softens a square room, sets off a round coffee table or creates a reading corner around an armchair. In that case, choose a diameter of at least 200 cm so the furniture does not look as if it is standing beside it.
