The Nordic Carnival mug by Broste Copenhagen takes the simple silhouette of a cup with handle, slightly tall, with a narrow diameter. The handle is held firmly, the wall remains straight up to the rim. Nothing decorative weighs down the volume: the piece stands upright by its proportions alone.
The reactive-glazed stoneware gives each piece its own surface. Firing causes the glaze to react, concentrating in places and lightening elsewhere, in a camaïeu of terracotta and cream. The variations in shade and irregularities are part of the process and mark a worked ceramic rather than one reproduced identically.
Its capacity suits morning coffee as well as afternoon tea. Placed in numbers on an open shelf, the mug forms a living collection, since no two pieces ever present exactly the same gradation.
