Buying guide:Sofa dimensions: which size, seat and density to choose?

design, from convertible corner sofa to modern leather sofa

Line and comfort are the essential points in the choice of a designer sofa. Our selection is large because this furniture often signs the atmosphere of a living room: it gives the spirit of it.

Line and comfort are the key considerations when choosing a designer sofa. Our selection is a wide one, as this piece of furniture often sets the tone of your interior: it gives it its spirit. Several options are open to you: rounded or more structured sofas, corner sofas or straight sofas, fabric sofas or XXL leather sofas. For spacious living rooms, go for three-seater corner sofas. For smaller spaces, modular sofas or two-seater sofas will be more than enough to bring a warm, cocooning feel to your living space. Whatever your style, you are sure to find the perfect seat – the sofa you will happily lounge on for hours on end…

Before choosing a new sofa, there are several criteria to bear in mind in order to make the most of your home's furnishings. Are you planning to place it in your Scandinavian-style lounge? Creating a relaxed dining room or a cosy little flat? Or are you looking for benches to furnish the entrance of your loft? A modern, sophisticated, understated or rather baroque design? To find the model that best suits your interior, take a look at The Cool Republic: you will find every shape, material and style, from the designer sofa to the sofa bed, by way of the corner sofa, the fireside chair and the chaise longue! You can choose designer sofas in a multitude of colours, with cushions in modular sizes, in rattan, linen, velvet… there is something for every taste! Are you looking for comfortable seating? Or matching armchairs and sofas? In microfibre? With poufs? Browse our selection and let yourself be inspired!

For a snug, timeless sofa, head straight for HKliving! Their Retro sofa collection, with its vintage feel, is sure to delight, with two-, three- or four-seater sofas in dark blue velvet or beige fabric. To keep everything in tune, opt for the matching footstools! This lovely Dutch brand offers artisanal craftsmanship and materials with beautiful finishes – think plush armrests and black lacquered metal legs that lend these sofas unrivalled elegance.

At Bloomingville, the lovely brand with Scandinavian design credentials, you will find sublime contemporary sofas: a large corner sofa in anthracite grey wool with an oak frame for a rustic yet supremely comfortable look, or one in velvet, oak and metal with a high back for a more bohemian feel. There is even a charming and very comfortable occasional bench that you can move around as you please to create the relaxation space of your dreams!

At Bolia, another Danish brand we love, you will also find a wide selection of contemporary-style sofas offering optimal comfort in the minimalist Nordic tradition. We adore their clean curves and lines, which will sit perfectly within the décor of your modern living room. The brand's design is functional and offers endless possibilities for all your decorating ideas: corner sofas with modules, taupe sofas for a discreet touch, small sofas with wooden legs, grey fabric or premium leather upholstery… Bolia's models will make your moments of relaxation a joy and turn your sofa into the centrepiece of your rooms!

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the ideal size of designer sofa for my living room?

Start by measuring the available space in terms of length, width and ceiling height. A designer sofa should take up 60 to 70% of the wall facing you without overwhelming the room. For a small living room, opt for compact models of 180 to 220 cm. In a large space, be bold and go for 280 cm or more. Always allow at least 30 cm of circulation space around the piece for optimum comfort.

Which material should I choose for a high-end sofa: leather or fabric?

Full-grain leather offers timeless elegance and improves with age. It is more stain-resistant and requires simple care. High-density fabric is ideal for families with children, feeling softer to the touch and offering a wider range of colours. Premium leather suits minimalist interiors, while fabric lends itself to warmer settings. Both guarantee a lifespan of at least 10 years with regular care.

How do I care for and clean a designer sofa in leather or fabric?

For leather, use a damp cloth regularly and a specialised cleaning milk every three months. Avoid excessive moisture and direct heat sources. For fabric, vacuum weekly and treat stains immediately with a mild stain remover. Use a soft brush to revive the fibres. An annual professional textile stain treatment will considerably extend the life of the piece.

Can a designer sofa be combined with modular elements or a chaise longue?

Absolutely — contemporary designer sofas pair perfectly with standalone modules or a chaise longue. This configuration lets you adapt the space to your changing needs. You can choose matching elements in the same materials and shades, or mix textures to create contrast. Sofas with a convertible chaise longue also offer a significant space saving for smaller interiors.

Which style of designer sofa best suits a contemporary or minimalist interior?

For a contemporary interior, go for clean lines, slender metal or wooden legs, and a neutral or monochrome palette. Low sofas with a generous seat depth create a modern, comfortable atmosphere. Black or light grey leather, teamed with geometric accessories, creates a minimalist harmony. Unadorned shapes and generous yet restrained proportions are the hallmarks of today's high-end contemporary design.
