Jaime Hayón
A design drawing on a variety of sources of inspiration
Born in Madrid in the 1970s, the artist and designer Jaime Hayon has for several years been producing unique creations that bridge the gap between art and design. Deeply influenced by skateboard and graffiti culture since his teenage years, Jaime Hayon now creates pieces of furniture and interior décor that blur the boundaries between art, interior design and design. After studying at Fabrica (a design and communication academy funded by Benetton), he became head of the design department under the renowned Oliviero Toscani. His collections reflect a modern and comfortable interior style that is easy to embrace.
He took part in numerous exhibitions and design fairs before setting up his own studio in 2001. He has since collaborated with a number of brands, for which he creates furniture and objects with a distinctive style: &Tradition, Fritz Hansen, Magis and Baccarat. His current work often draws on a bold, original and varied imagination. His work is frequently featured in prestigious art and design publications worldwide. His work has been recognised on several occasions through awards and glowing reviews: he received the Elle Decoration International Design Award, and The Times describes him as a “design visionary”.
Among his many creations, The Cool Republic features his Formakami lighting collection, designed for the brand &Tradition. These hand-crafted pendant lights made from rice paper are inspired by Asian lanterns, and bring this aesthetic back into fashion! Jaime Hayon has said, “Good design is, above all, design that lasts. (…) It must be able to improve our quality of life, and it must have meaning.” This sums up his philosophy perfectly: pieces that are functional, durable and timeless, yet also aesthetically pleasing.
