The Shoemaker stool by Form & Refine is a true classic that has been made in Denmark since 1936, where it is still produced to this day by our local joinery. The seat is shaped from a single large piece of solid wood and, because of the variations in the wood grain, every Shoemaker Chair is completely unique. Together, the turned legs and the stabilising T-shaped connection create a harmonious, attractive piece of furniture with strong references to Nordic design.
The construction may look rather simple, but it is technically difficult to master. The piece of solid wood has to be carved with great precision to guarantee optimum comfort.
At the end of the process, every model is worked by hand before undergoing a three-stage surface treatment process of staining or oiling.
Designer: the design of the Shoemaker chair dates back to 1936 in Odense, Denmark. In the 1970s, the design was taken on and adopted by the Werner family, who come from a long line of fine wood turners, a profession that barely exists today. Over three generations, the family has renewed and refined the chair's shapes and re-established its design and production to make it what it is today: a true design classic.
They have tirelessly optimised the chair from the very earliest stages, adjusting certain aspects year after year – both in the production flow and in the finished product. Among other things, the T-shaped legs were added for greater stability, and the seat was reshaped and rounded so that, should the chair fall over, the rounded profile protects the top line from breaking.
On the island of Funen, the Werner family works from the Gislev Drejerforretning wood-turning joinery, founded in 1913. Today, the third generation of the Werner family has taken over the joinery side of the business. The designer and the wood turner have remained the same for years.
