Named after the mythical Titan condemned to hold up the heavens on his shoulders, the sturdy legs of the Atlas table firmly support its spacious tabletop. The meeting and the contrast between the legs and the tabletop lie at the heart of the design, with each element exaggerating the other, giving the table its distinctive presence and raw look.
For Atlas, John Astbury drew on several influences from the history of architecture. There are references to porticos and colonnades, but Atlas draws mainly on the archetype of post-and-lintel construction. Combined with simple geometry, the circle and the square, these are the primary archetypes that together create the character and composition of the table.
