Taccia

Created in 1962 from the simple idea of turning a ceiling light upside down, the Taccia table lamp by the Castiglioni brothers has become an icon of Italian design. Having never lost any of its splendour, it has evolved over the years and been produced in several versions.

Thanks to its distinctive shape and style, it immediately earned its place in design history. Over the years, Taccia has become a true ambassador for the identity and cultural values of Flos.

In a 1970 interview, Achille Castiglioni described the design as follows: “It is seen as the Mercedes of lamps, a symbol of success, perhaps because its base brings a column to mind. Fame was not at all our aim when we designed it; we simply wanted to create a cooling surface capable of dissipating heat.”

The lamp’s base was indeed designed to resemble a radiator, in order to underline its function: dissipating the heat given off by the lamp itself. Its characteristic cup-shaped reflector in blown glass was also an incredible piece of craftsmanship. But like all outstanding designs, Taccia has evolved over the years to embrace progress.

The first new version featured an LED light source. It was swiftly followed by a model with a plastic reflector, just as the designer duo had originally intended. Initially impossible to achieve because of heat distortion, the problem was solved by LED technology. Taccia has also been offered in a smaller size and in a range of colour options.

Today, as part of an ongoing collaboration with the Fondazione Castiglioni, Taccia is available in a brand-new Matte White finish, which accentuates the lamp’s pure form and design. Once again, Flos reinvents a masterpiece and brings it into the present day, while showing the greatest respect for the original model. The Taccia story continues.
