Frequently asked questions

At what height should a pendant light be installed?

The height depends on how it will be used. Above a dining table, allow 75 to 90 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the pendant. This lights your guests properly without blocking the view or causing glare. Above a kitchen island, go up to 80-95 cm to leave room if you work standing up. In a living room with a standard ceiling (2.40-2.60 m), position the pendant 2.10-2.20 m from the floor so that it structures the room visually without getting in the way. For high ceilings (3 m+), hang the pendant lower (2.40-2.60 m from the floor) to create a real presence and concentrate the light. In a hallway or entrance, keep a minimum of 2.10-2.20 m to avoid bumping your head. In a bedroom, position the pendant 1.80-2 m from the floor above a console table, or higher in the centre of the room. Tip: if you're unsure, cut out a cardboard silhouette of the pendant and tape it up at different heights to visualise the effect before the final installation. At The Cool Republic, pendants are supplied with a long electrical cable (often 1.50-2 m) that can easily be shortened during installation.

What size pendant light for what size table?

The general rule: the pendant should measure 50 to 70% of the table's width. For a table 100 cm wide, choose a pendant 50-70 cm in diameter. For a 200 cm table, allow 100-140 cm in diameter, or else 2-3 smaller pendants in a row (for example 3 pendants of 35-40 cm in diameter, evenly spaced). For a round table, choose a pendant with a diameter close to a third of the table: a 120 cm table = a 40 cm diameter pendant. For a long rectangular table (240 cm+), go for 2-3 pendants in a row rather than a single very wide one, which is harder to balance visually. If you opt for several pendants, space them so that they divide the length of the table into equal parts (3 pendants over 240 cm = 80 cm apart). For height, follow the 75-90 cm rule between the table and the bottom of the pendant. For very imposing pendants (like the Beat by Tom Dixon or the Cloud by Frank Gehry), make sure you have genuine ceiling height (2.60 m minimum) so that they can make their full visual impact.

What type of bulb should I use for my designer pendant light?

The majority of contemporary designer pendants run on LED, either with a standard E27 (large) or E14 (small) screw-cap bulb, or with integrated LEDs (non-replaceable, with a lifespan of 25,000-50,000 hours). For a replaceable bulb, choose a 5-9 W LED for 600-800 lumens (equivalent to a classic 60 W bulb) or 9-13 W for 1000-1200 lumens (equivalent to 80-100 W). The colour temperature depends on the use: 2700-3000 K (warm white) for the living room and dining room, 3000-4000 K (neutral white) for the kitchen. The CRI (colour rendering index) should be above 90 for faithful colours, which is essential in the kitchen (seeing the colour of food) and the living room (doing justice to fabrics and artwork). For globe pendants in opal glass, fabric or paper, choose LEDs with a clear envelope to show off the material. For minimalist metal pendants, a retro filament LED adds a vintage character. Dimmable compatibility lets you adjust the atmosphere: make sure that both the bulb AND the dimmer switch are compatible (not all LEDs can be dimmed, and some flicker at low intensity).
