Emil Thorup is both the founder and designer of the Danish brand Handvärk. He is particularly committed to revolutionising Danish furniture design through new finishes and a careful selection of authentic, sustainable materials, whilst retaining that Nordic warmth.

All Handvärk furniture showcases Danish design with a distinctly Scandinavian soul. It is set apart by Emil Thorup’s signature style, resulting in pieces free from any sense of theatrics. With archetypal and pure lines, the designer’s signature is also evident in the furniture’s famous cross-shaped structures, formed by black metal tubes.

Designer Emil Thorup’s collectable pieces are particularly well-suited to modern, minimalist interiors. They are built to last, thanks in particular to the use of high-quality materials such as marble, leather and brass. As well as their design, they are both practical and comfortable. The creation of each piece of furniture is entrusted to highly experienced Danish craftsmen, who take particular care to ensure the perfect balance between the technical and aesthetic aspects of the pieces.

Emil Thorup is a true enthusiast of design and architecture, although he began his professional career as a television presenter. Self-taught, he has always been deeply passionate about design and architecture. He launched his brand, Handvärk, in 2015, drawing in particular on his Danish heritage to produce Scandinavian-style furniture. Emil Thorup went on to make his mark in this field by drawing inspiration from the Bauhaus movement. His minimalist, simple pieces – characterised by geometric shapes, functionality and a lack of ornamentation – quickly became a huge success… and quite deservedly so!
