Tom Dixon

The self-taught Tom Dixon has had a most unusual career path.

Born in Sfax, Tunisia, in 1959, Tom Dixon is an internationally renowned British designer. His background and career choice were the result of a combination of circumstances. Whilst studying for a degree at Chelsea College of Art and Design, he decided to drop out after six months as the course did not meet his expectations. He then played in a rock band that was making a name for itself in the genre at the time. On the side, Dixon began salvaging metal from Chelsea Harbour with his friends Mark Brazier-Jones and Nick Jones – who would go on to form the trio Creative Salvage – to turn it into functional sculptures.

Having been a self-taught musician, Tom Dixon set about teaching himself design. He created pieces and sold them to fund the creation of others. After going on to become creative director at Habitat, he launched his own eponymous company.

‘I like a narrative, like everyone else, but they’re often after-the-fact rationalisations. I think I’m a bit more instinctive than cerebral in that sense. Design – as opposed to art or sculpture – gives you a formal framework. There’s an expectation of functionality, and I’m more comfortable with certain constraints. It has to support you, it has to be able to hold liquid, it has to provide light.”

His quest for imperfection in his creations is evident in his Melt pendant light collection. Created in collaboration with the Swedish design group FRONT, the range of light fittings seeks to achieve a blown-glass effect. With a hypnotic appearance, the Melt pendant lights come in several colours, all of which harmonise beautifully when combined in the same room. Featuring more symmetrical yet still highly original forms, the Void pendant light collection aimed to create lights that mysteriously conceal their light source.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Tom Dixon?
Tom Dixon is a British designer of Tunisian origin, born in 1959. Self-taught (he started out as a bass player in a rock band, then learned to weld in order to repair his equipment), he has become one of the most recognised designers of his generation. His eponymous brand, Tom Dixon, was founded in 2002 in London and has established itself internationally through its sophisticated industrial design and bold use of metal (copper, brass, raw steel, polished aluminium). The Tom Dixon spirit can be summed up in a few words: sculptural industrial style, fine metals and statement design. The brand mainly produces lighting (pendant lights, floor lamps, table lamps) and living room furniture, with an instantly recognisable visual signature. Production takes place in Italy, the United Kingdom and Asia depending on the piece. Tom Dixon himself remains active as a designer, and also collaborates with other designers and brands (notably IKEA for special editions). Today, Tom Dixon furnishes restaurants, hotels and design showrooms all over the world. The Cool Republic is a Tom Dixon stockist in France.
What are Tom Dixon's iconic pieces?
Several Tom Dixon pieces have become icons. The Beat pendant light (2005), inspired by Indian water vessels, is an absolute benchmark. Available in 4 sizes (Beat Stout, Beat Tall, Beat Wide, Beat Fat) and several finishes (black brass, white, copper), it can be found in design restaurants across the globe. The Copper pendant light (a polished copper sphere, 2005) has become iconic for its mirror effect. The Stone table lamp (in solid marble and brass, 2014) marks the shift towards finer materials. The Hex stool (in coloured hexagonal metal) adds a graphic touch. The Etch collection (table lamps and pendant lights with laser-etched patterns) is in high demand. More recently, the Melt collection (pendant lights and lamps in mercurised glass that appear to be melting) caused a sensation at design fairs. On the furniture side, the S Chair (1992, a historic Tom Dixon design predating his own brand) is still produced in its original form. The Wingback and Pylon chairs complete the catalogue. Tom Dixon's strength: every piece is instantly identifiable and brings a sophisticated industrial character to an interior.
Is Tom Dixon an expensive brand?
Yes, Tom Dixon sits at the high end of contemporary design. For a Beat pendant light (Stout or Tall model), expect to pay 600-900 euros depending on the finish. The Beat Wide or Beat Fat (larger models) can reach 1100-1600 euros. The Copper pendant light (depending on size S, M or L) ranges between 500 and 1500 euros. The Stone lamp comes in at around 700-1200 euros. The Hex stool sells for 350-500 euros. The S Chair (Cappellini edition) reaches 1500-2500 euros. For limited editions or special collaborations, prices can exceed 3000 euros. Why such high prices? Production is mostly European (Italy, UK), materials are premium (solid brass, polished copper, marble, mouth-blown mercurised glass), the design is by a named designer (Tom Dixon personally oversees every piece), and there is a long warranty. In investment terms, signature Tom Dixon pieces retain exceptional resale value, particularly the limited editions from 2005-2010. A Beat pendant light bought 10 years ago is worth almost its original price today. This is furniture that can be passed down through generations without going out of fashion. Take advantage of the official sales twice a year and the outlet for display models at reduced prices.
