Space Copenhagen
Duality and contrast are the key concepts at Space Copenhagen.
Founded in 2005 by Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou, Space Copenhagen is a design studio operating in a range of fields, including furniture, lighting and interior design, as well as art direction and art installations.
The duo’s ambition is to create an intuitive approach to design that is directly guided by circumstances, functional needs and the fundamental interests of human behaviour.
“We are obsessed with the material aspect. It is almost a passion for us to create something that embodies a slow rhythm.”
The studio aims to forge new paths by balancing opposites: classic and modern, sculptural and minimalist, light and shadow. They are obsessed with duality and contrast, as well as curiosity as a fundamental human condition.
Signe said: “My grandmother was a passionate architect, so when I was a child, I never saw architecture and construction as dominated by masculine energy. But later, at architecture school, I realised that most of the people I admired were actually older men. As a young woman, this sometimes felt alienating. Over time, it was wonderful and eye-opening to learn about the works and stories of talented and ambitious female architects and designers, who have contributed to the industry with great success and relevance, on their own terms.”
Studio Copenhagen has collaborated with numerous brands, starting with the Danish design house Fredericia. There are also many collections distributed by the Danish brand &tradition. There’s a touch of intimacy and vintage charm to the Loafer chairs and sofas, whilst the Fly armchairs draw inspiration from Nordic design. Finally, it is the sense of tradition that comes through in the Collect vase collection.
