It was against the backdrop of the post-dictatorship era, during a period of extraordinary vitality, euphoria and celebration – also described as the ‘design boom’ – that Nanimarquina was born, the brand that burst onto the market with a new vision for the times: to transform the traditional rug into a contemporary design piece.
Inspired by her father’s boundless creativity, Nani Marquina, founder of her eponymous brand, followed in his footsteps and, at the dawn of the 1970s, embarked on a design approach more closely aligned with art and craftsmanship. It was a challenge the young designer rose to, as she sought to “create visually stunning rugs”. Today, the Nanimarquina rug collection comprises true works of art, alongside numerous collaborations with internationally renowned artists, architects and designers.
Concern for the environment has been a constant throughout the brand’s history. From the very beginning, the rugs have been designed with sustainability in mind: they do not contribute to a throwaway culture and promote recycling, thereby encouraging a more conscious approach to consumption. Over the years, Nanimarquina has pioneered rugs made entirely from recovered and reused materials. To this day, their main objective remains unchanged: to reinvent the world of rugs, always combining tradition and design, whilst approaching sustainability from a practical perspective. Nanimarquina is also deeply committed to its social responsibility initiatives in India and Pakistan. Since 1994, the brand has been fighting against child labour and working to improve children’s quality of life and education through its collaboration with the Care & Fair charity.
