Muller Van Severen
The complementary duo Muller Van Sever form a poetic artistic collaboration.
Founded in 2011, Muller Van Sever is the name of the artistic collaboration between the two Belgian designers Hannes Van Severen and Fien Muller. Whilst Hannes Van Severen – son of Maarten Van Severen – was studying at the LUCA School of Arts’ Sint-Lukas, Fien Muller was completing her degree in photography at University College Ghent in Ghent. Muller Van Severen works from a greenhouse converted into a home-studio in Ghent.
The duo collaborated for the first time in 2001 on a range of matching tables, chairs and shelves, which was already named Muller Van Severen. It was their shared love of colours and materials that brought them together creatively and forms the basis of the duo’s designs. Celebrated worldwide for their minimalist elegance, they bring their vision of colour and their appreciation for simplicity to their collaborations. They strike a balance between art and design by basing their work on ‘landscapes of life’.
“Our love of materials is the starting point for most of our designs. We are constantly seeking new ways to showcase the natural beauty of our materials, and we aspire to let the materials speak for themselves, without hiding anything. The techniques we use to design our pieces, the way the materials age over time, and the tactile experience they offer are all deliberate choices on our part.”
Following numerous collaborations with the Danish brand HAY, the Muller Van Sever duo created the Arcs collection for them. Sharing the poetic shape of the lampshade’s signature design, the Arcs vase and the Arcs candleholder are also sculptural, and the elegant frame becomes a spatial volume that encloses a vase or a candleholder. Simple yet playful, they have the perfect style to harmonise the objects in a room.
