Michael Anastassiades
Michael Anastassiades and his passion for the ageing of natural materials.
Born in Cyprus, Michael Anastassiades is a designer best known for his work in lighting design. After completing a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at Imperial College of Science and Technology, he went on to obtain a Master’s degree in industrial design at the Royal College of Art in the same city. Anastassiades sees himself as neither a designer nor an artist, but as a creative. He opened his London studio in 1994 and launched his brand in 2007.
His design philosophy is based on preserving the inherent qualities of the materials he uses. All the products he creates in his studio are handcrafted and feature a natural finish, without protective lacquers, for example.
‘I’m fairly open-minded about using a variety of materials; I particularly appreciate those that remain true to their true nature, rather than those that try to be something they’re not. I also like to choose materials and finishes that age well over time, rather than those that remain unchanged as the years go by. I believe there is an incredible aesthetic in the patina created by time. I like to think that an object is timeless in what it reflects and communicates.”
All his creations are a blend of industrial design, sculpture and the decorative arts. He describes his work as simple yet meticulous, drawing inspiration from his two fields of study. Anastassiades aims to combine product design, experimental work and spatial interventions, transcending several creative disciplines.
Whilst producing for his eponymous brand, Michael Anastassiades collaborates with renowned brands. One example is his partnership with the French brand Coedition for the T-Square collection of wall shelves. With its minimalist style, this shelf draws its design from the theme of balance, demonstrating precise architectural craftsmanship.
