Mathias Steen Rasmussen

Mathias Steen Rasmussen (born in 1990) is a young Danish designer who takes a seasoned and rigorous approach to furniture design. He trained in art and cabinet-making and completed his apprenticeship in 2019 with the highest honours.

When working on his own designs, his philosophy is ‘honesty in construction’. This means keeping the design process open to what an object is made of and how it is constructed, often with a penchant for showcasing the natural grain of the wood and visible joints.

As a trained cabinetmaker, wood is usually Rasmussen’s starting point. He often incorporates other natural materials such as glass, stone and rope to create textural contrasts, resulting in an aesthetic dialogue between colours, techniques and surfaces. With a sincere respect for his materials and a keen sense of balance between form and function, his work pays a respectful homage to mid-century Danish design.
