Designing your kitchen: lighting, seating and tableware
The essentials
A pleasant kitchen is planned in order: worktop and circulation first, then lighting, and finally what you put on display. Allow 90 cm of clearance around an island, hang a pendant 65 to 75 cm above the surface and choose stools at the right height: a 65 cm seat for a 90 cm worktop.
- Measure your worktop height before choosing stools
- Light the worktop separately from the rest of the room
- Display only what is beautiful and useful, and store the rest
Start with the worktop and seating
In a kitchen, everything revolves around the worktop. Leave 90 cm of clearance around an island, or ideally 120 cm between the island and the units if two people often cook together. To eat at the counter, allow an overhang of 25 to 30 cm so there is room for your knees.
Choose stool height based on your worktop: you need roughly 25 to 30 cm between the seat and the top of the counter. Allow 60 cm of width per stool so nobody bumps elbows. A footrest makes a high seat far more comfortable during a long meal.
| Surface | Surface height | Seat height |
|---|---|---|
| Standard worktop | 90 cm | 65 cm |
| Bar or high counter | 105 cm | 75 cm |
| Kitchen table | 75 cm | 45 cm (chair) |
Typical guidelines: always measure your worktop before ordering.
Take a seat
Light your kitchen in two layers
A kitchen needs two kinds of light: precise task lighting and softer ambient lighting for meals. Aim for around 500 lux on the worktop, with under-cabinet strip lights in neutral white (3500 to 4000 K) so you can see food clearly. Above the table or island, warm white (2700 to 3000 K) creates a gentler mood in the evening.
Hang your pendant above an island or kitchen table, 65 to 75 cm from the surface: low enough to light it without glare, high enough not to block the view. Over a long island, line up two or three pendants spaced 60 to 80 cm apart, keeping about 30 cm between the last one and the edge. Near the hob, opt for smooth finishes (lacquered metal, glass), which are easier to clean than fabric or openwork shades; near the sink, an IP44-rated light fitting withstands splashes.
Kitchen lighting
Crockery and glassware: a core set, then pieces for entertaining
For crockery, start with a plain, dishwasher-safe core set: 26 to 28 cm dinner plates, pasta bowls, 20 to 22 cm dessert plates and bowls. Buy as many pieces as you usually have people at the table, plus two extra for breakages and unexpected guests. Then add a few stoneware or coloured pieces for entertaining: a serving dish, some mismatched dessert plates. Check whether handmade stoneware is dishwasher and microwave safe.
For glasses, a versatile 25 to 35 cl tumbler covers everyday use, for water as well as juice. Wine and cocktail glasses come next, for when you entertain: a wider glass for red wine, a narrower one for white. Mouth-blown glass is recognisable by its fineness; ideally, wash it by hand.
Utensils built to last and made to be seen
Wood, stainless steel and silicone make up the most durable trio. Wood won't scratch your pans and just needs a little food-safe oil, but it must be washed by hand. Stainless steel, ideally 18/10, won't rust and is dishwasher safe. Silicone protects non-stick coatings and handles heat: check the stated maximum temperature, often around 220 °C.
Choose utensils attractive enough to stay out on the worktop: a pot by the hob holding a spoon, spatula, ladle and whisk saves you opening a drawer every time.
Get cooking
Accessories: display or store
Canisters, boards and cutlery trays: whatever stays on show deserves to be chosen with care, and the rest can be put away. Keep at least 60 cm of worktop clear for food preparation. Group canisters in the same material (glass, ceramic or metal) for a cohesive look, and stand one or two wooden boards against the splashback: they double as serving platters for drinks and nibbles. In drawers, a compartmentalised cutlery tray keeps clutter at bay.
