Designer
Jonas Wagell
I try to create furniture and objects that possess inherent qualities, both aesthetically and in terms of craftsmanship. My work is minimalist and focused on form.
Born in 1973, Jonas Wagell is a renowned architect and designer from Stockholm. He trained not only in graphic design and interior design but also in architecture, marketing and communication at a number of international schools, including the Parsons School of Design in New York.
Throughout his career, he has worked with numerous manufacturers such as Muuto, Mitab, Bergaform and BSweden. Known for his modern style, his designs reflect a sense of softness and simplicity. Designed for everyday use by everyone, his pieces combine graphic simplicity with a welcoming energy.
He founded his studio, JWDA, which specialises in architecture, product design and brand identity management. In keeping with the Scandinavian minimalist tradition, the designer is dedicated to creating functional and simple objects. Jonas Wagell focuses primarily on the functionality of his products rather than their artistic aspect, but enjoys incorporating personal touches into his designs – a approach he calls ‘generous minimalism’. One of JWDA’s flagship projects is the miniature, prefabricated house known as the ‘Mini House’. The designer was ranked amongst the 50 best young architects by Wallpaper magazine in 2008 for this project.
JWDA is now undertaking a growing number of Scandinavian and international collaborations on interior design projects, from China to Italy and the United States. For his partnership with the family-run furniture company MENU, Wagell has designed a collection of lamps that are as warm and inviting as they are aesthetically pleasing, drawing inspiration from traditional oil lamps.
Since 2012, the JWDA studio has been contributing to the annual collections of the Scandinavian brand Normann Copenhagen. Starting out with a simple candle holder, he now designs all manner of pieces for the company, including sofas and the famous ‘Local’ pendant lights.
