Jasper Morrison

The most successful objects are almost always a balance between appearance, atmospheric potential and function.

Jasper Morrison graduated from Kingston Polytechnic Design School in 1982 and decided to continue his studies at the Royal College of Art in London and at the University of the Arts in Berlin. He set up his own studio following his academic career and immediately secured partnerships with renowned manufacturers such as Aram, SCP, Cappellini and Vitra. Some of his designs are on display at MoMA in New York and in numerous other museums around the world.

Together with his colleague Naoto Fukasawa, the artist pioneered the concept of ‘super normal’ design, which they define as ‘good design’. For them, this refers to the relationship one has with an object that does not seek to draw attention to itself but which provides a definite sense of pleasure – an experience that is, of course, subjective. All his creations are based on this conception of the object and a blend of minimalism and practicality. The industrial designer’s well-considered simplicity has led to the fame of some of his now-iconic pieces, such as the HAL Tube chair, the Glo-Ball pendant light and the All Plastic Chair.

In 2000, he designed the Air-Chair for the furniture manufacturer Magis, which has become emblematic of Jasper Morrison’s work. Reflecting the designer’s minimalist vision, it combines simplicity with bright, cheerful colours. Made from sturdy materials, it is regarded as a contemporary classic of minimalist design.

Following the launch of the Air-Chair, Jasper Morrison was awarded the title of ‘Royal Designer for Industry’ in 2001 in London and named ‘Designer of the Year 2000’ at the Paris Design Fair.
