Designer
Gerrit Rietveld
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888–1964) is one of the greatest Dutch architects and furniture designers of all time.
The son of a carpenter, Rietveld was trained by his father as a cabinetmaker before setting up his own workshop in 1917. In 1919, he embarked on a career as an architect and
joined the ‘De Stijl’ movement, which helped to define his progressive style. Rietveld’s avant-garde approach focused on adapting and tailoring architecture to the way people lived their lives, constantly seeking harmony between architecture and interior design. Rietveld’s mission to create well-designed, affordable furniture for the general public resonates with HAY’s values, leading to a collaboration between Rietveld Originals and HAY, with the relaunch of his iconic 1934 box series.
