Designer
Arik Levy
A wealth of talent for Arik Levy.
Born in 1963 in Tel Aviv, Arik Levy is a renowned designer, but also a multi-talented artist. He started out as a surfer, artist and graphic designer in his own studio. It was after his first exhibition that he went on to study industrial design at the Art Center Europe in Switzerland, where he graduated with distinction in 1991. Arik Levy then moved to Japan, where he established himself artistically by producing exhibition pieces, before returning to Europe to contribute to the contemporary dance and opera scenes as a set designer.
Levy has thus moved between disciplines, working as an artist, technician, photographer, designer and video artist. His work can now be seen in numerous prestigious galleries and museums around the world. He is best known to the general public for his sculptures, such as his Rock Signature pieces. Arik Levy is a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic.
“Design nourishes my expertise and my intuitions in art.”
Although he considers himself more of a sensitive artist, Arik Levy has never lost his ability to bear in mind the functional aspect of what he designs. His poetic, pared-back style is evident, for example, in the Toolbox he created in collaboration with the Vitra brand. His aim was to create a practical organiser for storing work materials and accessories. The toolbox can be placed in a cupboard, on a shelf or in a trolley, and suits all styles whilst adding Arik Levy’s personal touch.
The artist also explores light in his collaboration with the French brand Forestier for the Bamboo lighting collection. Emphasising the blend of natural and contemporary design, Arik Levy has carefully selected his materials to achieve an elegance that suits a range of styles. The shadow cast onto the walls by the lampshade is both unique and delicate.
