Amalie Skov Rahbæk
From furniture design to children’s toys, Amalie Skov Rahbæk brings a sense of gentleness to her work.
Born in Denmark in 1991, Amalie Skov Rahbæk is a designer whose reputation is on the rise. After completing a Bachelor’s degree in design at the VIA Design and Business School in Aarhus, she founded her own studio, Design by Skov.
Amalie Skov Rahbæk’s design process is meticulous and thoughtful. Aiming to carry on the tradition of Scandinavian design, she creates simple yet functional, multi-purpose pieces. She combines fresh, contemporary ideas with soft forms and distinctive material combinations that characterise her designs.
Her career took off after she presented her Wallie shelving unit at the Greenhouse exhibition during the Stockholm Furniture Fair in February 2016, as part of the VIA University College exhibition. She wanted to create a striking visual impact with a simple design that could both stand alone in a room and be paired with other pieces of differing designs. The Danish brand Woud will be distributing the model, which serves as both a shelf and a wall-mounted drawer. She sought to incorporate the soft forms that define her style, as well as the aesthetic appeal and practicality of such an object, which seems ideal for any room in the home.
Amalie Skov Rahbæk is also active in a completely different field: the design of children’s toys. Her soft approach to colours and finishes is evident in the PLAY collection.
“Children imitate their parents, which is why it’s important to me that the products reflect playful values, with the aim of guiding and enhancing role-play.”
With children, their development and their social skills in mind, she creates toys that will keep children entertained for hours, whilst their style and design will appeal to parents.
