Mat

After years of in-depth research, prototypes and testing, Normann Copenhagen is proud to introduce Mat, a cleverly crafted range of chairs made from hemp and eelgrass, a marine seaweed. Durable and highly renewable, these materials are a superior alternative to those traditionally used for 3D shell chairs. The name Mat refers to the material innovation at the heart of the piece. Rooted in the three Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle – the Mat range sets out to revolutionise conventional furniture production by minimising its environmental impact, reusing its own waste and making eventual recycling easier. With a focus on innovation and circularity, the Mat project aims to create a contemporary shell chair using materials with a lower environmental impact than the industry standard. Designed by Danish design studio Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen, this new chair is the result of years of research and development. Jan Andersen, CEO and co-founder of Normann Copenhagen, explains: “When Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen presented their hemp chair, our curiosity was immediately sparked. Curiosity has always driven Normann Copenhagen and, true to our commitment to exploring innovative production methods, we embarked on this project alongside Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen, as well as hemp specialists from the Danish Technological Institute.”
