Named after the mythical Titan condemned to hold the heavens upon his shoulders, the sturdy legs of the Atlas stool press firmly against the rounded seat. The meeting and contrast between the legs and the seat lie at the heart of the design, with each element exaggerating the other, giving the stool its distinct presence and brutalist look. For Atlas, John Astbury drew on several influences from the history of architecture. There are references to porticoes and colonnades, but Atlas draws mainly on the archetype of post-and-lintel construction. Combined with simple geometry, the circle and the square, these are the primary archetypes that together create the stool's character and composition. The Atlas stool can fulfil many different functions, as a seat or a side table, and enriches a space as a standalone piece.
