Named after the mythical Titan condemned to hold the heavens on his shoulders, the sturdy legs of the Atlas stool lean heavily on the rounded seat. The meeting and contrast between legs and seat are at the heart of design, each element exaggerating the other, giving the stool its distinct presence and brutalist aspect. For Atlas, John Astbury drew on several influences from the history of architecture. There are references to porticos and colonnades, but Atlas is primarily based on the archetypal post-and-lintel construction. Combined with a simple géométrie, the circle and the square are the primary archetypes that, ensemble, create the caractère and the stool's composition. The Atlas stool can perform many different functions, as a seat or side table, and enriches a space as a stand-alone piece.
