Originally designed by Dutch architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld in 1934 to make use of surplus wooden shipping crates, the Crate collection has been relaunched as part of a Rietveld Originals x HAY collaboration.

Made in keeping with the original design, the Crate Lounge sofa shares the same precisely balanced proportions and the same transparent construction to minimise production costs and optimise the assembly process. The sofa features low proportions with a slightly inclined back and seat along with supportive armrests, its simplicity and spatial design reflecting the designer's architectural principles – offering functionality and comfort without taking up space.

Made from solid pine with a water-based lacquered finish in a variety of colour options, the Crate Lounge sofa suits a multitude of outdoor settings and can be completed with optional seat cushions in selected textiles for added comfort.
