In Italy, art and life are intimately entwined. This journey in pictures takes you inside its most incredible hotels, through whose doors and windows are revealed pastoral landscapes, great centres of culture and divine food. Angelika Taschen also introduces us to other, more intimate and hidden gems. The superb photographs of these retreats, large and small, from Venice to Sicily, offer a wealth of inspiring ideas for your next stay in the land of the dolce vita.
Secret retreats and grand hotels of legendary charm
To travel through Italy is to draw close to paradise. For centuries it has attracted writers, artists, architects and merchants inspired by the magnificence of Venice, Florence, Naples and Rome. Countless books, paintings, poems and sculptures celebrate its timeless allure. Over the past 60 years it has become one of the world's leading tourist destinations. Its refinement and its unique, free and carefree art of living never grow tiresome.
Gathered here are many of Italy's most enchanting landscapes, such as Tuscany, Umbria, the Amalfi Coast and the no less magical Aeolian Islands off the coast of Sicily. Hidden within these legendary settings are hotels of fabled charm, the backdrop to novels, films and great love stories, and where weddings are still celebrated: the Villa d'Este on the shores of Lake Como, the Hotel Splendido in Portofino, Il San Pietro on the Amalfi Coast and the Villa Cimbrone in Ravello, to name but a few. Angelika Taschen also introduces us to other more intimate and hidden gems, such as the romantic Locanda Cipriani on the island of Torcello and Castello di Vicarello in Tuscany, or the charming Masseria Moroseta in Puglia.
