How to choose a bedroom rug
The essentials
In a bedroom, the rug is there first and foremost for when you get up: it should be under your feet when you get out of bed. A 70x140 cm bedside rug on each side, or a 120x180 cm rug at the foot of the bed, is enough in most bedrooms. Wool gives the most warmth, cotton is the easiest to wash.
- Bedside rug: 60x90 to 80x140 cm, laid 10 or 15 cm from the bed, singly or as a pair.
- Foot of the bed: 120x170 cm in front of a 140 bed, 120x180 cm in front of a 160 bed.
- Material: wool for warmth under bare feet, washable cotton for a child's bedroom, flat-weave for quick cleaning.
- Large rug slid under the bed: allow for 50 to 60 cm showing on each side, that is a 200x300 cm under a 160 bed.
What size of rug for a bedroom?
It all depends on where you want the rug: beside the bed, at its foot, or underneath. The rugs gathered here are small sizes, up to 120x180 cm, which are laid around the bed without having to move it.
| Bed width | Bedside rug (per side) | End-of-bed rug | Large rug under the bed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 cm | 60x90 or 70x100 cm, one side only | 70x140 cm | 140x200 cm |
| 140 cm | 70x140 cm | 120x170 cm | 170x240 cm |
| 160 cm | 70x140 or 80x140 cm | 120x180 cm | 200x300 cm |
| 180 cm | 80x140 or 90x140 cm | 120x180 cm | 250x350 cm |
Practical guidelines, to be adjusted to the space available. Large rugs can be found in the all rugs collection.
In the selection, the 120x180 and 120x170 cm sizes are the most represented, followed by 70x140 cm, 80x140 cm and 90x130 cm. Nearly six rugs in ten are no bigger than 90x150 cm: these are the bedside rugs.
For a larger rug
How do you position a rug in a bedroom?
Four placements work: three with a small rug, one with a large size.
- One bedside rug: a rug parallel to the bed, on the side where you get up, 10 or 15 cm from the bed base. The top edge lines up with the bedside table.
- Two bedside rugs: two identical rugs on either side of a double bed. The arrangement stays symmetrical and leaves the floor visible in the centre.
- A rug at the foot of the bed: a 120x170 or 120x180 cm laid crosswise, the long side parallel to the foot of the bed. It can take a bench or an armchair.
- A large rug under the bed: the rug starts from the front of the bedside tables and extends 50 to 60 cm beyond the sides and the foot.
| Solution | Size | Bedroom floor area |
|---|---|---|
| One bedside rug | 60x90 to 80x140 cm | From 8 m² |
| Two bedside rugs | 2 rugs of 70x140 cm | 10 to 14 m² |
| End-of-bed rug | 120x170 or 120x180 cm | 12 m² and over |
| Large rug under the bed | 170x240 to 250x350 cm | 14 m² and over |
Indicative floor areas for a bedroom with a double bed and a wardrobe.
Bedside rug or large rug?
The large rug ties the bed and the bedside tables together, but more than half of it stays hidden under the bed base. Two bedside rugs give the same comfort when you get up for three to four times less surface area. If you prefer a single rug slid under the bed, look for it among the large sizes in the all rugs collection or the living room rugs.
Wool, cotton or natural fibres: which material for a bedroom?
The bedroom is the room where you walk barefoot. So the feel matters more than resistance to foot traffic, which is lighter than in a living room or a hallway. One bedroom rug in two in the selection is wool; cotton, vinyl and natural fibres share the rest.
| Material | Underfoot | Care | For which bedroom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wool | Warm, thick, cushions footsteps | Vacuum without a rotating brush, dab stains with cold water | Adult's bedroom, cold floor, wooden or tiled floor |
| Cotton | Supple, thin, soft | Often machine washable in small sizes | Child's bedroom, anyone sensitive to dust |
| Jute and natural fibres | Firm, raw texture | Vacuum, does not like damp | Foot of the bed, natural-style bedroom |
| Sheepskin | Very soft, long pile | Shake out and brush | Small bedside rug, at the foot of an armchair |
| Vinyl and recycled fibres | Smooth or short-pile, cooler | Damp sponge or wash with water | Desk area, play area, dressing room |
Long pile, short pile or flat-weave
A long-pile rug is the most pleasant to wake up to, and the bedroom is the room where it wears the least. The short-pile tufted rug, 1 to 2 cm thick, remains the most versatile. The flat-weave, a few millimetres thick, fits under a door and holds less dust.
Berber, long pile or tufted: which style of rug for a bedroom?
- Berber: thick wool, ecru background, irregular diamonds. It warms up a bedroom with white walls and goes well with pale wood.
- Long pile: enveloping feel, fluffy look. Best kept for a bedside rug, where nobody ever walks in shoes.
- Short-pile tufted: even surface, crisp patterns or textured plain. The easiest to live with at the foot of the bed.
- Flat-weave and boho: cotton or wool, stripes, fringes. Lightweight, it can be layered over a carpet or a larger rug.
Eight rugs in ten in the selection are rectangular. Around thirty have an organic shape, with free-form outlines, to place in front of an armchair or a dressing table. As for colours, grey and beige dominate, ahead of brown, green and blue. A pale, low-contrast shade encourages calm; keep bright colour for a small size.
Edito is the most represented brand, with vinyl rugs in graphic patterns. myfelt assembles wool felt balls, Colortherapis works wool in bold colours. Lorena Canals offers washable cotton rugs and wool models, Ferm Living and Woud Scandinavian wool rugs. Bloomingville, House Doctor and Hübsch round off the selection with cotton rugs, Nattiot with sheepskins, Nanimarquina with designer rugs.

By style and by brand
Which rug for which bedroom?
In a small bedroom of less than 10 m²
A single rug of 60x90 or 70x140 cm, on the side where you get up. Choose a pale one, short-pile or flat-weave: it does not weigh down the floor or block the door. If the bed is pushed against the wall, place the rug on the free side rather than at the foot.
In a master bedroom with a pale wooden floor
Two bedside rugs in ecru, beige or grey wool, 70x140 cm, or a 120x180 cm rug at the foot of the bed. Stay within two or three shades close to those of the bed linen: the wood remains the decor.
In a child's bedroom
Go for a machine washable cotton rug, short-pile, in a size of 120x170 or 120x180 cm: big enough to play sitting on the floor, light enough to fit in the drum. Add a non-slip rug underlay: children run.
On a tight budget
Small sizes are the most affordable rugs: nearly half the models in the selection are offered at under €200, and three in four at under €500. Cotton and vinyl sit at the lower end of that range, hand-knotted or hand-tufted wool at the upper end.
For a child's bedroom
How do you look after a bedroom rug?
- Every week: vacuum in the direction of the pile. On wool, remove the rotating brush, which pulls out the fibres.
- Every six months: turn the rug round by half a turn, or swap the two bedside rugs over, to even out wear.
- If there is a stain: dab straight away with a clean cloth, without rubbing, from the edge towards the centre.
A washable cotton rug goes in the machine at 30 °C, on its own, then dries flat. Wool and jute should not be washed with lots of water. In a bedroom, the rug mostly holds dust and fibres from bed linen: vacuuming every week matters more than a big annual clean.
