Danish design house HAY invites us into its world imbued with purely Scandinavian minimalism. With the help of an army of award-winning international designers, HAY unveils pieces that are sometimes understated, sometimes exuberant, always following one guiding principle: elegance. A true producer of best-sellers and of pieces that almost rise to the status of icons, HAY has established itself as a safe bet in the world of design.
The Uchiwa armchair and Ottoman footstool were designed by the designers behind the Dapper sofa. Doshi Levien is a London-based design studio founded in 2000 by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien. Doshi grew up in India and studied at the National Institute of Design, while Jonathan, originally from Scotland, trained in cabinetmaking and then in industrial design. They met while studying at the Royal College of Art. They have earned a solid reputation for creating designs that are both technically advanced and steeped in cultural resonance. Their work has gained international recognition and in 2008 they received the prestigious Future Legends of Design award from the Cooper Hewitt National Museum of Design in New York. Together, they bring a complementary set of skills to the projects they work on. Doshi is mainly interested in visual culture, an aesthetic understanding of the world and the materiality of things, while Levien focuses more on precision and industrial technique. They have worked on projects for leading companies and institutions in the fields of furniture, fashion, homeware, technology and lighting.
Uchiwa is a spacious armchair inspired by the gentle opening shape of a traditional Japanese fan. Generous and welcoming, both original and familiar, the armchair comes in two upholstered versions: a softer quilted model for a more domestic setting and a moulded foam version for a more demanding contract context. The base is available in natural or stained oak.
You will find all the models and colours of HAY's Ottoman armchairs on The Cool Republic website. Why not also treat yourself to the Ottoman footstool, which matches the armchair perfectly.
