The best-selling XXL monograph, now available in a condensed edition. Exceptional reproductions of Basquiat's plus most important paintings, drawings and sketches, together with texts by editor Hans Werner Holzwarth and curator and art historian Eleanor Nairne, bring us closer to a legend synonymous with 1980s New York.

An unprecedented exploration of Basquiat's art and work

The legend of Jean-Michel Basquiat is still very much alive. Synonymous with the New York of the 1980s, the artist first appeared in the form of the SAMO tag, signature, the caustic comments and fragments of poetry he inscribed on the walls of ville. He emerges as part of a growing underground scene, made up of visual arts and graffiti, hip-hop, post -punk and independent cinema, destined to join the flourishing art world. Gifted with a power and voice all his own, Basquiat broke with the established milieu and exhibited through the worldwide gallery circuit.

Basquiat found his own mode of expression in a style that blends raw forms, words and phrases. His work is inspired by the great names of jazz, boxing and basket, and alludes to the secrets of history and urban politics. Indeed, when asked about his subjects, he would reply: "royalty, heroism and the street". In 1983, he began collaborating with one of art's most plus famous stars, Andy Warhol, and in 1985 he produced a cover for the New York Times Magazine . When he died, aged 27, he was recognized asone of the most talented artists of his time.

Originally published in XXL format, this unprecedented overview of Basquiat's art is now available in an accessible and compact plus in honor of TASCHEN 's 40th anniversary. With exceptional reproductions of his most important plus paintings, drawings and sketches, it offers a striking proximity to Basquiat through his mysterious signs and scrawled words, illuminated by an introduction to the artist by editor Hans Werner Holzwarth and an essay on his favorite themes and artistic evolution by art historian and curator Eleanor Nairne. The artist's life is retraced, year by year, through richly illustrated chapters enriched with Basquiat's own quotations and critical texts published at the time, providing a better understanding of his personal experience and the historical context of his work.
