The Platone desk was designed by Giancarlo Piretti in 1970. Its three-disc mechanism is the common thread running through all of Piretti's best-sellers, of which Platone is the boldest. Featuring a sturdy cantilevered top, it is a practical folding desk, ideal for contemporary spaces such as offices and workspaces.

Born in Bologna in 1940, Piretti studied at the city's Istituto Statale d'Arte before joining Anonima Castelli as a designer. One of his most famous creations is the Plia chair, unveiled in 1969. Among his most remarkable designs are Plona, Platone and DSC 106, which would later extend his ranges to the Axis 3000 and 4000 models. In 1988, at the NeoCon show in Chicago, he presented the Piretti Collection: a series of more than 50 chairs and seats fitted with a patented mechanism in the backrest, allowing the seat to be adjusted according to the user's weight.
