A new perspective on Scandinavian design

Rooted in the heritage of Nordic design, Muuto reinterprets Scandinavian codes through a contemporary, sensitive and innovative approach. Founded in Denmark, the brand takes its name from the Finnish word muutos, meaning "new perspective" — a philosophy that guides each of its creations. Furniture, lighting and decorative accessories make up a world where functionality, craftsmanship and timeless aesthetics converse with bold shapes, innovative materials and a genuine emotional quest.

Muuto is developing a forward-looking vision of Scandinavian design, whilst remaining true to the core values that have shaped its identity: simplicity, sustainability, functionality and the authenticity of materials. Each creation is conceived as a fresh interpretation of Nordic design, offering a different perspective on everyday objects.

The brand collaborates with contemporary designers who share this same sensibility: a desire to explore new forms, new uses and new emotions, whilst maintaining a minimalist and sustainable aesthetic. This fusion of tradition and innovation gives rise to pieces that are intuitive, welcoming and deeply contemporary.

At Muuto, design is viewed as a sensory and emotional experience. Colours, textures, materials and silhouettes influence how spaces are perceived and experienced. A single detail, a fabric, a curve or a light can transform an atmosphere and create a special connection with the object.

Muuto’s collections are thus characterised by their balance between Scandinavian minimalism and contemporary design. The lines remain clean and simple, yet are always enhanced by a distinctive touch that piques curiosity without ever overwhelming the space.

Designed to last and evolve alongside interiors, Muuto’s furniture, lighting and accessories blend seamlessly into both residential and professional settings. Each piece reflects a design philosophy in which comfort, craftsmanship and innovation coexist in harmony.

Through this philosophy, Muuto offers much more than just a style: it offers a way of living in spaces with sensitivity, simplicity and an openness to new perspectives.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Muuto and what is its philosophy?

Muuto is a Danish brand founded in 2006 in Copenhagen by Peter Bonnén and Kristian Byrge. The name comes from the Finnish word muutos, meaning new perspective. The brand set itself the mission of extending the great tradition of Scandinavian design (Wegner, Jacobsen, Aalto) while giving it a contemporary breath of fresh air. Muuto works exclusively with renowned international designers (Cecilie Manz, Anderssen & Voll, TAF Studio, Mika Tolvanen, Iskos-Berlin) and favours limited editions over a sprawling catalogue. Every piece is designed to last for several decades, with a look that never dates. Production remains largely European (Denmark, Italy, Poland) with strict quality controls. Muuto was acquired in 2017 by Knoll and is today part of the MillerKnoll group, which gives it international stature while preserving its Scandinavian identity. At The Cool Republic, you will find the entire Muuto catalogue with fast delivery in France.

What are Muuto's best-known pieces?

Several Muuto pieces have become iconic within just a few years. The Outline sofa by Anderssen & Voll, launched in 2014, has become a benchmark for the contemporary Scandinavian living room: slender silhouette, high back, meticulous finishes. The Nerd stool (designer David Geckeler), a bent-wood chair available in several heights, furnishes offices and bars all over the world. The Fiber chair (Iskos-Berlin), with its bio-composite shell made from wood fibres, offers exceptional comfort and durability. On the lighting side, the Unfold pendant (in soft silicone) and the Leaf table lamp have become classics. The Linear dining table and its matching bench are among the bestsellers. For decoration, the Framed mirror and the Pull Vase make a strong statement. The Wood Clock by Jens Fager rounds off Scandinavian interiors with a poetic touch. Muuto's strength: a tightly focused catalogue (around 200 active references) with consistent quality and remarkable visual coherence.

How much does Muuto furniture cost?

Muuto positions itself at the upper end of contemporary Scandinavian design. For a Fiber chair, expect to pay between 400 and 600 euros depending on the finish. The Nerd stool sells for between 280 and 380 euros. The 3-seater Outline sofa ranges from 3,500 to 5,500 euros depending on the fabric (from standard textile to premium leather). A 200 cm Linear dining table costs around 2,200-3,500 euros. For lighting, expect 300-500 euros for an Unfold or Cosy pendant, and 400-700 euros for an E27 floor lamp. Decorative pieces (Pull vases, Wood Clock) range from 100 to 350 euros. Overall, you are paying for Knoll quality (perfect mechanics, impeccable finishes, durable materials), signature design and European production. Compared with other high-end Scandinavian brands (HAY, &Tradition, Fritz Hansen), Muuto sits in the same price bracket. Take advantage of the sales (January and July) for discounts of 15-30%, and of end-of-line offers when a product is replaced by a new version.

Why choose Muuto rather than HAY or &Tradition?

The three Danish brands may look similar but each has its own distinct identity. Muuto stands out for its pared-back modernity and conceptual approach: fewer colours, highly considered forms, a search for material innovation (Fiber composite, Unfold silicone). It is the most minimalist of the three. HAY relies more on colour and accessibility (a broader catalogue, slightly lower prices), with a strong presence in everyday life (office, accessories). Its colourful palette is highly distinctive. &Tradition cultivates the Scandinavian heritage with iconic re-editions (Flowerpot by Verner Panton, Bellhop by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby) and a historically more upmarket positioning. In short: Muuto for contemporary minimalism, HAY for colourful optimism, &Tradition for Scandinavian heritage. You can also mix them harmoniously, for example a Muuto Outline sofa, an &Tradition Flowerpot lamp and a HAY coffee table. In fact, it is often the mix that creates the most successful interiors.

Is Muuto an eco-responsible brand?

Muuto has stepped up its sustainability efforts since its acquisition by Knoll in 2017. Several concrete initiatives: largely European production (reducing transport), recycled or bio-based materials on certain pieces (the Fiber chair uses a composite made from post-industrial wood fibres), FSC certification for wood and Oeko-Tex for textiles. Packaging is made from recycled cardboard with no plastic for most products. Muuto also publishes an annual sustainability report and has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. The brand deliberately maintains a tightly focused catalogue (around 200 references) rather than large seasonal volumes, which limits overproduction. That said, international production (notably in Asia for certain fabrics) remains an area for improvement. To minimise your impact, opt for durable, iconic pieces (Fiber, Outline, Linear) that will stay in the catalogue for 10-20 years, rather than seasonal colour editions that are quickly discontinued.
