Stoned was founded by Derkan Atakan and John ter Riet: two marble enthusiasts. In 2014, the opportunity arose to offer something exclusive yet utterly familiar, and so they began creating their own products using premium marble. These include simple serving and kitchen boards, hand-cut and polished in their own small workshop, as well as other basic yet elegant pieces.
In their neighbourhood in Amsterdam, the two founders soon set up a pop-up shop where their first marble items were sold. Their collection then expanded, as did their range of retail outlets. From elegant concept stores in Amsterdam to the Dutch luxury department store De Bijenkorf, Stoned products are now available in over 180 concept stores, design shops and department stores worldwide.
Stoned Marble’s creations are designed to be understated essentials. They are exclusive – every piece of marble is unique – yet simple enough, with a minimalist, user-friendly approach. In the Amsterdam neighbourhood where it all began, a Stoned shop has now opened, and the founders’ own offices are filled with chic, urban marble, inspired by their open-minded hometown of Amsterdam.
Stoned products are designed to stand the test of time. These include serving and kitchen boards, as well as other stylish items such as fruit bowls, wine coolers, bookends, trays and side tables. Everything is made from marble from the Aegean coast.
These designer marble pieces are made to last a lifetime. However, as the founders point out, there are certain things you need to know about marble. For example, don’t drop it! Marble is beautiful and strong, but it is also fragile. Marble is a natural product, so whilst the black marble collection is predominantly black with white veins, brown and grey hues may also appear. The white collection is naturally white with grey veins and streaks, whilst the pink marble collection may have a yellow or purple hue. Small holes and cracks may appear.
