ORCHID EDITION

Pushing rattan to its absolute limits by stripping it of its usual visual codes, or, conversely, using it as the very foundation of the creative process – this was the driving force behind this project. The result is a designer rattan collection that challenges many preconceptions and aligns with the major trends of the moment, such as the use of open-weave rattan and lines inspired by Thonet-style bentwood. A rattan design that breaks free from its exotic or seaside connotations to become urban and global in scope, making it a natural fit for any contemporary interior.

However innovative it may be, Orchid’s designer rattan is well aware of how much it owes to the age-old tradition of rattan furniture-making. Beneath its futuristic design lies a genuine tribute to rattan in all its forms. Thick, flexible rattan is used extensively for the structures. The French-style open-weave, created by weaving together strands of rattan bark, is yet another technical feat. The use of meshwork is a recurring feature throughout the collection. And finally, basket-weave-style plaiting, scattered here and there, from the ‘Corridor’ rattan coffee tables to the ‘Onde’ designer rattan mirror. A new vision of rattan that seeks to highlight the immense technical potential of this tropical plant.
