It is in her studio in Montreuil, in the Paris region, that Céline Wright creates her wide range of designer lighting. The designer uses a number of traditional techniques that were revisited and refined at the start of the 21st century. The artist is one of a number of designers committed to eco-friendly and non-polluting manufacturing methods.

“Manual labour is the only form of human energy that does not pollute,” says Céline Wright.

Each light has therefore been manufactured in France using natural and, above all, non-polluting materials. Each paper lamp is unique, moulded and shaped by hand; “a shell from the ‘Cocon’ range can be made up of more than 1,600 strips of paper, each individually glued into a mould. It can take up to seven hours of work to make one,” explains the designer. The production of each indoor light can take up to four days’ work. The paper sphere is sturdy, unbreakable, and acts as a diffuser, casting a superbly soft and soothing light. All of Céline Wright’s lamps are delivered to your door via a local network to save energy and reduce the carbon footprint associated with transport.

For many years now, the designer has been celebrating and showcasing ‘washi’, a type of white Japanese paper. This ancient Japanese technique enables the designer to convey her story by creating lighting designs with ethereal forms, resembling a cloud or a suspended cocoon. Much like origami or papier-mâché, this Japanese washi ball is directly inspired by Japan, where the artist spent her childhood. Washi, made from mulberry fibre, retains its whiteness over time, is highly durable and is transparent, making it ideal for creating a pendant light of immense lightness.
