Margrethe Odgaard
Margethe Odgaard is Denmark’s colour genius, and she conveys this through her textile designs.
Born in 1978 on the Thyholm Peninsula in Denmark, Margrethe Odgaard is part of her country’s new generation of textile designers. She studied and graduated with a Master’s degree in textiles in 2005 from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Denmark. She then continued her studies at the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States, before working as a textile designer in Philadelphia. She subsequently moved to Paris and joined the French fashion house EPICE. In 2013, she moved to Copenhagen, where she opened her own design studio. She has received numerous awards and gained international recognition for her work with textiles, colours and patterns.
“I wanted to create a range of shades that have an immediate appeal to the senses and relate successfully to the body.”
It was in her quest to develop a palette of rich and complex colours that Margethe Odgaard created her own colour system, expressing colour through her personal design language: the Popsicle Index. She continues to use and develop it in her various projects with brands such as Georg Jensen Damask, Ikea, Muuto, Hay and Kvadrat.
“Working with colours and patterns is like playing music. A note on a piano has a certain sound, but it is only when combined with other sounds that it becomes a melody.”
The Cool Republic stocks the Pebble and Ply rug collections, produced by Muuto. Designed in 2018, the Pebble rug embodies the Scandinavian dream. With its wool loops resting on a sturdy canvas base to evoke a pebble beach, it is an original design that suits a wide range of interior styles. The Ply rug, meanwhile, showcases the simplicity of Scandinavian design, with a warm feel at the forefront. Both are available in a wide range of colours and sizes.
