Doshi Levien
I’m surprised when people see my work as more decorative or ornamental, because I think it’s very logical.
Have you heard of the design studio Doshi Levien? On this page, the Cool Team invites you to discover the world of this internationally renowned duo, who continue to make waves around the globe!
This design studio was founded in 2000 in London by Nipa Doshi, born in 1971 in India, and Jonathan Levien, born in 1972 in Scotland. Nipa grew up in India and studied at the National Institute of Design, established in line with the manifesto of another world-famous duo: Charles and Ray Eames. Jonathan, for his part, completed an apprenticeship in cabinetmaking and then in industrial design.
Their paths crossed at the Royal College of Art in London, where they now live and work together in the same studio, having combined their disciplines and creative output over the years to create hybrid pieces imbued with craftsmanship, blending beauty and functionality.
Doshi Levien’s work was recognised in 2008 with the prestigious Future Legends of Design award presented by the Cooper Hewitt National Museum of Design in New York, and numerous brands such as Cappellini, Moroso, B&B Italia and Camper have called upon their talent to create exceptional collections, in which every product exudes aesthetic appeal and quality.
This is also true of the HAY brand, which you may already have come across on a page dedicated to their collection on The Cool Republic’s website.
The Quilton sofa collection and the Uchiwa range – considered must-haves for their high quality and unique design, and available from our online shop – are, in fact, the result of the Doshi Levien/HAY collaboration.
The Quilton modular system is a multifunctional sofa combining comfort and flexibility, capable of fitting into a wide range of layouts thanks to its high level of versatility. Its generous dimensions, sculpted shapes and range of contemporary colours make it the centrepiece of any living room.
As for the Uchiwa range of armchairs and ottomans, it combines elegance, minimalist design and comfort with a spacious, padded seat inspired by the gentle curve of a traditional Japanese fan, to be paired with the eponymous footstool for a superb combination suitable for any room in the home.
In a nutshell, style reaches its zenith with this studio, which continues to enchant us with its dreamlike creations.
