After several decades out of production, Carl Hansen & Søn resumed production of Hans J. Wegner's CH22 lounge chair in 2016. At first glance, you'll notice Wegner's characteristic grand wooden backrest with visible covers, but on closer examination of the chair at plus, other characteristic Wegner details become apparent. On the sides, you'll see, for example, that the armrest support embraces the side frame and that the seat frame extends only the full width under the armrest, to give it optimum support. At the rear, the seat's paper cords are routed down around the seat frame and through a horizontal groove in the backrest rail. There are two refined joints at the front of the seat where the front legs are guided upwards through the hand-assembled à la corners.
Although production has naturally been modernized, the CH22 chair is still made according to the same artisanal principles as when Wegner followed and participated à la in the manufacture of the first examples in Carl Hansen's family workshop in 1950. In the meantime, modernization has improved precision, so that the front legs, which were originally round, can now have the same profile as the chair's back legs. This means they are now manufactured as Wegner had originally designed them on his technical drawing, i. e. the legs had to be pulled up through the seat frame and locked in place with wedges.
